Want to find out more about choosing the right mattress for your scoliosis needs?

Take a look below at the buying guide first!

Here are details of our best mattress for scoliosis reviews in 2022:

Best Overall Mattress AwardFounded in 2012, this American company became popular in a short time.

Two software engineers from Silicon Valley were fed up with the mattress industry’s lack of transparency and fairness for consumers.

And decided to do something about it.

Tuft and Needle (T&N) believe in conducting honest business, selling only premium products at a good price.

All of their mattresses are designed and crafted in the US and support American manufacturers.

Their fabric comes from a family-owned textile mill in the Carolinas and their foam is poured and cut in the US.

All of the finishing touches are done in South Carolina before they send out your new mattress to you.

In 2018, T&N merged with Serta Simmons Bedding but still operates as a separate brand.Nod by Tuft & Needle Adaptive Foam Mattress

It was really hard to pick our favorite but as difficult as it was, we had to decide…

And our favorite is Nod by Tuft & Needle 8” Mattress.

It’s simple, honest and created by regular people like you and me who were looking for an affordable bed.

The Adaptive foam is perfect for those with scoliosis who need pressure relief in areas like their hips and shoulders.

And it also provides great support for your back and spine with the high-density foam layer.

Hot sleeper?

No problem! T&N takes care of that with their gel-infused memory foam.

The 100-night trial gives you ample time for your curves to adjust to your new mattress.

This bed has FOUR separate certifications:

  • CertiPUR-US certification
  • Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX
  • Greenguard certification
  • Parent Tested Parent Approved certification

You won’t have to worry about any sort of chemicals affecting your family or the environment.

All of the materials put into making this bed are made in the US. They also support family businesses in the Carolinas.

Although Nod by T&N is our favorite, we’d also recommend Lucid Memory Foam for the best value and the Olee Sleep Galaxy Hybrid for a luxury feel.

Remember to choose one that best fits your budget and scoliosis needs!

People with scoliosis usually feel more pressure on their hips and shoulders when they sleep.

Why?

Because the curve of the spine makes those parts stick out.

Adaptive Foam

T&N’s dual-layer, high-density Adaptive Foam gives you the support, pressure-relief, and bounce-back you need in a mattress that contours to your unique spinal curve.

Specially-designed based on customer feedback, this foam is made for any type of sleeper and all body weight.

Because of the spring-like support of the base layer, the more pressure you put on the bed, the better the support it gives you.

The top layer of the Adaptive Foam is infused with graphite and cooling gel.

Cooling Gel & Graphite

Graphite is a grey, carbon mineral, commonly found in your pencils at home.

It’s used in foam because it helps to neutralize temperatures. Simply put, it absorbs the heat and cools you down.

Besides the foam itself being breathable, the cover around the mattress is made from a blend of micro polyamide and polyester.

Micro Polyamide

Commonly used in clothing, Micro polyamide is as an alternative to cotton because it’s very comfortable and dries 6-8 times faster.

If you tend to sleep hot, this is a great option for you!

You’ll be able to sleep cooler and longer on this mattress!

Many companies only offer you 30 days to try out your mattress.

Tuft & Needle gives you 100 nights to try it out – that’s a whole season!

Take this opportunity to test your new bed out during that time and see how you like its cooling feature.

It takes about 30 to 90 days for the average person to adjust and “break in” a new mattress.

For someone with scoliosis, you’d probably notice a difference in how your body feels within a couple of days.

Still not satisfied with your new bed after a couple of months? Just return it within your trial period, no problem!

Remember your trial period starts the day your new bed arrives at your door.

Rest assured, this mattress has been tested again and again. It’s got:

It also has low emissions and is better on indoor air quality.

Most mattresses have the CertiPUR-US certification, but T&N has gone above and beyond with their certifications and have 3 more!

The Greenguard Gold certification, given by Underwriters Laboratories, a global safety-consulting and certification company, these products satisfy the strictest chemical emissions standards.

Basically, products with this standard help reduce indoor air pollution and create a healthier environment inside your home.

T&N mattresses have all been tested for harmful substances in their textiles and materials and because of this, they hold the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX.

This certification is very strict because the materials used in mattresses will be in close contact with your skin.

Sensitive skin? No worries.

All of T&N’s products hold this high standard of certification so your skin will have no bad reactions to any of the materials used in their products.

Lastly, but certainly not least, their mattresses have been tested by real parents and their families.

By doing this, they received the Parent Tested Parent Approved certification.

Overall this bed is healthy for everyone in your family to use and safe for the environment.

“Limited warranty” might be misleading because this warranty covers A LOT!

This one, like many others, covers things like your average manufacturer and workmanship defects, but what else comes with it?

Any material breakdown of the foam like splits or cracks, body impressions that are ¾ of an inch or more and sagging of any kind are all included and will be taken care of.

This is a perfect guarantee for someone with scoliosis.

Although it shouldn’t be an issue, if your T&N mattress starts to take on any impressions left by the more prominent curves of your spine, you can get it replaced.

But that’s not all!

T&N’s warranty extends to the mattress cover as well.

If you notice any stitching coming undone or the zipper isn’t working, they will help you out with that too!

Best Value for Mattress Awardir?t=thesleepsavvy 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B01IU6RQW0Created in 2003 by Malouf, this brand set out to provide quality comfort for any budget.

Linenspa wants to provide a comfortable bed for all because they understand life happens differently for everyone.

Linenspa Innerspring Hybrid Mattress

This mattress is perfect if you’re on a tight budget!

It’s so affordable, you can probably buy a few extra for your children’s room and guest rooms.

Lower price doesn’t always mean lower quality, especially not in this case.

Because the supportive foundation is made from metal coils, this makes the mattress extremely durable and less likely to “give” and sink in over the years.

Sinking into your mattress is the LAST thing you need when managing your scoliosis.

You need all the support you can get!

There is also a felt pad placed between the springs and the layer of foam to keep the coils from rubbing against it, reducing wear and keeping the bed in great condition.

I’m sure a longer lasting mattress also sounds good to your wallet.

You won’t have to replace your mattress as often when you have a really durable one to use in the first place.

Not having to replace your mattress as often in your lifetime = more money in your pocket.

That sounds like a win to me!

These beds are considered “hybrids” because they are made from the traditional model of a spring mattress but have the added benefits of a memory foam mattress.

The best of both worlds.

You get the durability of the springs AND the conforming comfort and support of the foam.

Innerspring

The bottom layer of the LinenSpa offers the reliable and traditional support of the innerspring mattress.

The 6 inches of steel coils give you the bounce needed to distribute your weight evenly throughout the night.

Evenly distributed weight is definitely something you need when you have scoliosis.

Since your spine typically sticks out in more places and more severely, it can put more pressure on places like your neck, shoulders, and hips.

With the weight being distributed, those pressure points will now be relieved.

Because of how spaced the springs are, this bed also lightweight and breathe easy.

Memory Foam

Making up 1.5 inches of comfort foam, this layer conforms to the unique curves of your body and gives you the pressure relief you need for that scoliosis pain.

The foam layer also acts as insulation for the springs so you will have just the right amount to bounce while still giving you the back and spine support you need.

Memory foam is also quilted into the cover of the mattress taking up the remaining .5 inches.

Because this layer is so thin, it doesn’t retain any heat, unlike your typical memory foam.

This last bit of comfort will take the edge right off those pain areas your scoliosis is causing you.

Pros

Cons

Most Green Natural or Organic Mattress AwardAlthough new to the mattress scene (2015)  and not very well known, this brand is part of the Zinus family.

Zinus is a Korean-based company with its manufacturing factories in China.

Because their brands come directly from their own factories, there is no middle man.

That means they can keep their prices low = more money in your pocket.

Olee Sleep Galaxy Hybrid Memory Foam Mattress

I know what you’re thinking.

How can 13” of foam be very supportive?

Well, this plush memory foam mattress has something that many others don’t have.

It’s placed on innersprings.

A bottom layer of 7.5” to be exact.

When you suffer from scoliosis, one of the most important factors when choosing a bed is how much support it offers.

This bed offers an incredible amount!

It’s a bit more on the firm side, but still offers you the plush comfort of memory foam.

With pocket springs!

Pocket what?

The springs in this bed are individually placed inside fabric pockets, so they can work on their own.

Rather than being connected by their coils, they’re connected by these pockets.

What does this mean?

Since the springs work on their own, they’re able to bend and compress to the shape of your body.

This is good because it distributes your weight evenly.

You’ll be able to get the pressure relief for your curved spine and the firm support needed for your scoliosis.

This mattress lasts for many years – the pocket springs are protected by 2” of multi-high definition (HD) memory foam.

Not only are the coils separated with their own little fabric pockets, but they also have another layer of protection from this HD foam.

There’s no way these guys are going to be rubbing against each other and wearing down any time soon.

A longer lasting mattress means you don’t have to replace it as often, which translates to more money in your pocket!

Another advantage of having pocket coils in your mattress is that it cuts down on the movements you feel from your sleeping partner.

Maybe they’re a tosser-and-turner, late owl or early bird, or maybe they habitually go for their midnight pee break.

Whatever it is, you don’t want to wake each other up if you can help it.

Olee claims these coils eliminate motion disturbances throughout the night. It’d feel as if your co-sleeper wasn’t even there.

I don’t know about you but that sounds like a fantastic night’s rest to me!

All of Zinus’ memory foam mattresses are made from BioFoam.

What’s that?

Many memory foam mattresses are made with petroleum-based materials and are bad for the environment, Olee Sleep isn’t.

It’s naturally antimicrobial and resistant to dust mites.

The gel memory foam in the Olee Sleep 13” takes up just 1” of the bed itself.

But this 1” will work wonders on you, especially if you tend to sleep hot.

Your body temperature will be regulated while you sleep because the gel in the foam will absorb your heat and cool it down.

Besides being made from BioFoam and being infused with gel, this Olee Sleep bed also has a cover made from poly-Jacquard that also helps you sleep cool.

The two operate as separate and distinct brands.

Lucid believes you deserve to sleep on a bed made just for you.

Best known for “beds for the whole family,” they offer just about every type of bed for all unique sleepers.

With so many mattress options, you’re bound to find the perfect one for you or anyone in your family with scoliosis.

Don’t worry about sleeping hot with this bed!

This memory foam is infused with gel to help air flow through the layers keeping you cool while you sleep.

The gel beads inside that react to your body’s heat and regulate the temperature accordingly.

What??

Time for a mini science lesson.

When the gel beads come in contact with your body heat they change from a solid to a liquid.

This phase change allows the material to absorb and take out more of your heat which in turn cools down your mattress.

This TENCEL polyester blend cover is pleasantly soft to the skin and durable.

What in the world is TENCEL?

This fiber is sustainably-sourced from wood and mixed with different fabrics to make them more durable and moisture-absorbent.

It’s found in many household items such as baby wipes, medical dressing, clothing, and towels.

This TENCEL layer on the mattress surface creates more airflow and soaks up sweat to keep you cool and dry.

Wanna know what else is great?

The cover is removable and machine-washable. Just make sure you wash it on a low and cold setting.

For most scoliosis conditions, you need a firm bed that offers great support.

But do you want to sacrifice that body-hugging feeling you get with plush beds?

With the LUCID 10” you won’t have to!

You get the pressure-relieving support for your hips and spine, but also can experience the luxury-feel from the soft gel memory foam layer.

Like with all memory foams, this one contour to your body, encasing you in a cloud.

Whether you sleep on your side or back, your body weight will distribute evenly to give your spine a great night’s rest.

Remember those ozone depleters and heavy metals I mentioned earlier?

Well, good news!

The support foam for this mattress is also certified, so only safe materials with low emissions were used to make it.

Buyer's Guide: What to Look For in a Mattress for Scoliosis

Here are some important factors to consider when you’re out shopping for your new bed.

When it comes to picking out a mattress specifically to help you manage your pain with your scoliosis, having the right support is a MUST.

We know everyone’s body is unique. Everyone’s scoliosis is unique too.

You want to stay away from plushier beds.

Experts recommend medium to firm mattresses to help with your spine alignment.

Soft

Why stay away from soft beds?

For someone who has scoliosis, you need comfort as well as support.

Although you may think the plushier beds will give you more comfort, they will actually cause you more pain because they don’t offer you the support your spine needs.

You want to manage your condition by making sure it doesn’t progress any further.

Soft beds don’t offer any support for your spine and can worsen the curve in your spine.

Medium

supporting scoliosis - a curved spine

Usually, a medium is a universal “OK.”

Not too hard, not too soft. It’s juuuust right!

This is probably the best option when it comes to comfort and support.

It conforms to your body and offers the pressure point relief you need for your shoulders, hips, and neck.

It also gives you great back support.

Medium Firm

If you like a firmer feel or don’t need as much pressure-relief, go with medium-firm.

While not conforming as much, it offers really good back support because of the even surface.

We spend about a third of our lives sleeping.

A THIRD!

You will want a bed that will stay comfortable and in good condition while you manage your scoliosis.

Check things like the material it’s made of and how much the company trusts its own product.

A company that offers a trial period or a warranty that covers more than just manufacturer defects is a company that believes their bed is durable enough to stand by what they offer.

BioFoam

A healthy alternative to memory foam.

Many mattress foams aren’t safe for the environment or your home and family.

This plant-based foam is!

It doesn’t emit any fossil fuels like some traditional petroleum-based memory foams do.

BioFoam is the first fully bio-based foam, made from renewable resources and is also biodegradable!

It’s lightweight and doesn’t hold in moisture, which makes it great for a cool night’s sleep.

Because it’s rot-free and fungal-proof, it’s naturally hygienic.

It’s not likely you’ll find any mold in a mattress made from BioFoam like you may find in other foam beds.

The shock absorption property will reduce any motion transfer.

Basically, you won’t feel the movements of your sleep partner and will both have a better night’s rest because of it!

BioFoam is durable and meant to be long-lasting.

Overall, it’s a great, environmentally conscious option for you and your family.

Memory Foam

No matter how severe your scoliosis is, these offer the best pressure point relief.

Memory foam was introduced to the medical field to protect and comfort people in intensive care and as cushioning in wheelchairs.

It distributes your weight evenly, relieving pressure points throughout your body.

Beds made from memory foam are great for any type of sleepers; side, back, stomach (although I don’t recommend sleeping on your front).

They conform to your body and also help keep your neck and spine aligned.

The one thing to keep in mind is that they do tend to retain your body heat.

So if you’re a hot sleeper, I would definitely take this into consideration.

Gel-Infused Foam

You already have a condition to maintain, you don’t want to have to maintain your body temperature while you sleep too.

With the gel-infused foam you won’t have to worry about sleeping hot again.

The gel beads inside will react to your body heat and cool you down while you and your partner rest.

Hybrid – Foam & InnerSpring

The hybrid beds are those that have a traditional spring support base layer topped with a foam layer of some sort.

The springs in the mattress offer the best support and stability.

While the foam layer offers you the best comfort pressure relief.

Since the hybrid beds bottom layer is made with springs, it is very lightweight and offers great airflow for a cooler nights sleep.

Beds that are made with only dense layers of foam tend to be on the warmer side since they trap in your body heat.

Hybrid beds also are the more affordable option since they are made with fewer materials.

A mattress is a big investment.

One you will be using every day (and night) for 8+ hours for years to come.

You’re going to want to pick a mattress that covers some wear and tear, especially since it’ll be shipped in the mail.

Something could happen during the time it leaves the factory and when it gets to your door.

You should know whether or not your warranty will cover that sort of thing and for how long.

Many warranties are 10 years but only cover things like manufacturer defects or damage during shipping.

What happens if your mattress starts taking on body impressions and won’t reshape?

Well if you choose a bed like Nod by T&N, you won’t have to worry about that since their warranty covers body impressions of ¾ of an inch or more.

It’s important to choose a bed for not only the quality of the materials but for the quality of the warranty as well.

CertiPUR-US

When foam is CertiPUR-US certified, it means it has been tested in a lab to be free of:

  • Ozone depleters
  • Fire retardants (PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP)
  • Mercury, lead, other heavy metals
  • Formaldehyde
  • Phthalates (softening agent)

It will also be low on Volatile Organic Compounds (VOC) emissions for indoor air quality.

Greenguard Gold Certification

To get this certification the mattress must pass the volatile organic compounds (VOC) emissions test.

VOC’s are organic chemicals commonly found in a variety of household products like paints, varnish, cleaning products, cosmetics, and furnishings.

All of these products can release organic compounds while you use them or even when you store them.

Products that get the Greenguard Gold certification do not emit any organic compounds into the air, making the indoor air in your home healthier.

Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX

This worldwide certification was introduced in 1992 and goes far beyond most national and international standards.

With several hundred regulated substances, the Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX tests products for:

  • Banned Azo colourants, formaldehyde, pentachlorophenol, cadmium, nickel
  • Harmful chemicals that may not even be legally regulated yet
  • Environmentally relevant substance classes

And takes account of:

Parent Tested Parent Approved

PTPA is a community of parents, just like you, who get together and talk about the products they’ve tested where they offer tips and feedback for each other.

The feedback from the parents is also sent back to the companies to help them shape their products.

Meets Federal Mattress Requirements

All mattresses sold in the United States must meet certain requirements.

One of the main and most important requirements is Fire Retardant (FR) standards.

These standards basically mean that this mattress contains enough fire retardant chemical to withstand a 2 foot wide open flame for 70 seconds.

Your mattress probably won’t be catching on fire any time soon.

Scoliosis Mattress FAQ

Not too sure about mattresses for scoliosis?

Check out some of the frequently asked questions below!

best position to sleep with scoliosisMany experts will tell you to sleep on your back because it’s the most natural position for your spine.

But if you find sleeping on your back uncomfortable, then you can turn to your side.

Side sleeping can still offer your spine a natural position but you might have to prop a pillow between your legs to make your hips more comfortable.

You can also use a pillow, like a roll, behind your neck to help support your spine.

You may try placing your pillow in different areas around your body to see what works best for you.

Sleeping on your stomach is never recommended. Even for people without scoliosis.

Stomach sleeping puts unnecessary pressure on your neck and spine and can further damage it.

Can’t help it? Actually, yes you can.

Learn how to train yourself to sleep on your back!

Yes, memory foam is a great choice for people with scoliosis. Whether you sleep on the side or on your back.

Mom moment: If you’re a stomach-sleeper, maybe it’s time to start training yourself to sleep on your back. Better for you and your body.

The foam is able to distribute your body weight evenly, relieving the pressure build-up you have in spots like your neck, shoulders, and hips without having too much sinking.

Memory foam also offers the responsive medium-firm support you need to help align your spine and prevent your curves from getting worse.

You will want to choose a bed that is medium to medium-firm that contours to your body, is responsive and offers pressure point relief.

What do I mean by a bed that contours?

A bed that contours to your body will be one that molds to your body’s curves, giving you that cradling feel.

While some contouring is helpful, too much give, like a soft bed, will actually make your condition worse because it won’t provide enough support.

You need a firmness that balances both comfort and support.

Pressure relief is probably the most important thing to look for in a mattress because it will ease the pain you may experience in your hips, shoulders, and neck.

Since these areas stick out more because of your scoliosis condition, they usually cause more pain while you sleep.

So depending on how severe your scoliosis curve is, you may need a bed that conforms more to your body and is slightly softer, like a medium firm.

Scoliosis sucks, but a proper mattress can help you manage it easier.

Hopefully, our review of the best mattress for scoliosis helped you pick the one for you.
