Serta Perfect Sleeper Mattress scored an overall rating of 65.5%!
Scoring within the 60-69% range means that it’s a solid product – it should meet all your needs.
Serta Perfect Sleeper - Layer by Layer
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the five most common sleeping problems are:
- Tossing and Turning
- Lack of Support
- Sleeping Too Hot or Too Cold
- Partner Disturbance
- Mattress Roll-Off & Sagging
Are you suffering from any these? I’m pretty familiar with 1 through 4…
There’s hope!
Serta partnered up with the National Sleep Foundation and engineered the Perfect Sleeper mattress to help address these problems.
Later it even became the official mattress of the foundation.
Let’s dive deep into the 5 different layers!
Mattress Cover - FireBlocker Fiber
Since 2005, Serta has been making open-flame resistant products – one of these creations is the FireBlocker System.
The outer layer quilt is made of a proprietary blend of fire-resistant fiber that helps isolate fires and slows its’ spread on the mattress, giving more time for one to escape to safety and call for help.
This does NOT mean that it is fire-proof. A very, very small amount of products do not actually burn in the flames.
Watch this bedroom fire test video – courtesy of Wales Fire and Rescue Service.
It took just 30 seconds for the smoke to be unbearable and only 2 minutes for the whole room to burn up.
Mattresses and bedding are very flammable. According to the National Fire Protection Association,
“Mattresses and bedding ranked second among items first ignited in home fire deaths for years.”
In case you’re curious, upholstered furniture ranks first.
Remember:
- don’t smoke in bed – it’s the leading cause of bedroom fires, and
- turn off all heat source (Eg. portable heater) when you go to sleep or leave the room.
First Layer - Pillow Top
No need to buy a mattress topper, as this particular mattress comes with one already built-in.
With an extra inch of Serta’s advanced bedding technologies in their supportive memory foam, this pillow top helps soften up the mattress.
It relieves any pressure points on the body, resulting in a comfortable, deep sleep throughout the night.
Second Layer - Comfort XD Foam
The Serta Comfort XD Foam is designed to minimize the impact of motion, so you don’t have to ever worry about disturbing your partner’s sleep, and vice versa!
All foam material are CertiPUR-US Certified, which is a standard that all mattress manufacturers across the country should have.
It means that their foam products have been tested and approved for low emission off-gassing and have no harmful chemicals, like mercury, lead or any of the heavy metals.
Third Layer - Cool Twist Gel Memory Foam
Waking up in a puddle of sweat in the middle of the night, or from an unquenchable thirst as if you walked through a desert is never fun.
To prevent overheating from happening, a ½ inch of breathable, cool twist gel memory foam helps with reducing tossing and turning.
How?
By allowing for airflow, which keeps your body at an optimal temperature for sleeping.
As someone who tends to overheat a lot, especially in the hot summer months, I really appreciate this feature.
Fourth Layer - Serta Balanced Support Foam
Another layer of CertiPUR-US Certified foam to support the body and cushion the layers.
Nothing too special here.
Fifth Layer - 886 Custom Support with Best Edge Foam Encasement
With the custom support 886 coil system, each steel coil innerspring is individually wrapped and placed in a staggered pattern on the inside of the mattress.
Not only does it give you a certain level of flexible support as your body moves, but also encourages proper spinal alignment while you dream away.
Of course, this also depends on your sleeping position.
But if you stick to sleeping on your back or side, then this coil system will further reduce any cricks in the neck, stiff shoulders or backaches.
I have rolled off the bed before when I was younger, and it was a rude awakening!
That’s where the edge foam encasement comes in handy!
There are extra-deep foam blocks placed along the interior edges of the mattress, allowing you to use the space at the edge of the bed without it sagging.
Serta Mattress: Return, Warranty, Shipping & More!
Besides the physical mattress, what else does it comes?
I’m glad you asked – let’s find out together!
How long does a Serta Perfect Sleeper last?
If you’re using your Serta Perfect Sleeper every night (like most people), it’s a good idea to replace your mattress every 7-10 years.
The lifetime of the mattress depends on:
- the material used to make it
- how well it’s made
- how much you use it
- how well you care for your bed
Here are some questions to ask yourself:
- Are you using a mattress protector or cover?
- Are you cleaning it when you need to?
- Are you making sure that your four-legged friends are careful while on your bed?
Remember that the warranty period has nothing to do with how long the mattress can last for!!
Here are some rough metrics to follow:
- Innerspring can last for 7-10 years
- Hybrid can last up to 10-15 years
- Memory foam and Latex lasts the longest, about 10-25~ years
As part of Serta’s warranty package, they tell you how to better care for your mattress to extend its lifetime.
Does a Serta mattress offgas?
Yes, just about everything in your home will off-gas.
It’s not the healthiest thing for you.
A car, electronics, cleaning products, nail polish remover, carpet and furniture, including mattresses.
Why?
Because most modern day products are made with chemicals.
Offgassing is the release of gas that’s trapped in the material used to make the product. In mattresses, it’s usually the polyurethane foam.
Some people just don’t like the scent, but offgassing can also be odorless. So, how can you protect yourself and your family from a new bed?
Let it air out.
If you want it to go away faster, try opening all the windows and put it directly in the sunlight.
Also, make sure the mattress you’re considering to buy only uses CertiPUR-US certified foam or other similar certifications.
OR uses natural/organic material like cotton, wool or latex.
What are the Serta mattress sizes?
Serta manufactures mattresses in all of the 6 standard sizes.
From Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King and California King.
Did Serta mattress get a recall?
Relax!
The voluntary recall happened in 2008, over a decade ago, so don’t worry if you’re looking to buy a Serta today.
What exactly happened?
Well, about 6100 units were affected, specifically the ones manufactured between November 2007 and May 2008, and had to be recalled.
The reason was that that batch failed to meet the open flame test, which is a mandatory federal standard for all mattresses.
The voluntary recall proves that Serta is about safety first!
What is the Serta Perfect Sleeper trial period?
Unfortunately, there is no trial period for the Perfect Sleeper from Serta themselves.
This is not keeping up with industry standard – I’m hoping they’ll recognize this and change offer this in the future.
Serta has many retailers, so perhaps the place you bought it from will offer a sleep trial!
What is the Serta mattress warranty?
Depends on the model, but 10 years at a minimum!
It’s easy – you can start a warranty claim right on their website.
You can call their dedicated product warranty line at 1 -888 -557- 3782 from Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm Eastern Standard Time.
Like other warranty policies, they only cover the standard manufacturing defects.
No warranty ever covers normal wear and tear, any damages you inflicted on the product – intentional or not – or your comfort preference.
If you feel like it’s too firm or soft for your liking, best to refund or exchange it while you still can.
Here are the measurements for sagging or body impression that qualify for warranty claim according to the type of mattress:
- Innerspring or Quilted Hybrid = >1.5”
- Foam or Non-Quilted (Smooth Top) Hybrid = >0.75”
Remember to read these legal documents beforehand so that you fully understand what you’re getting yourself into.
I really like that Serta has their entire warranty policy uploaded online for all the read – this tells me that they are being transparent!

Is Serta mattress on QVC?
Yes, Serta was on QVC.
You pretty much “made it” when you can get on QVC.
A well-known shopping channel – but for Serta, this is just another notch on their belt!
QVC, which stands for Quality Value Convenience, was established in 1986 and broadcasts daily to more than 350 million households that span across 7 countries: US, UK, Germany, Japan, Italy, China and France.
Unreal.
When I see or hear QVC, I automatically think of Lori Greiner, the QUEEN of QVC, from Shark Tank – one of my favorite shows.
Lori earned the royalty title because she created 400+ products, received 120+ patents, and is just a natural on TV. With her first product – earring organizers – she sold 2,500+ units in 2 minutes!
No wonder she has her own show on QVC (called Clever & Unique Creations) for over 18 years!
I wonder how many mattresses she can sell if QVC put her on Serta.
Which Serta mattresses are double-sided and can be flipped?
There aren’t too many Serta double-sided mattresses that you can flip nowadays, but they do still exist.
Most people don’t want the hassle of flipping or rotating their mattresses every 3-6 months, so mattress providers stopped manufacturing two-sided mattresses.
In fact, it was Simmons’ Beautyrest brand that introduced the industry-first “no flip” mattress in 2000, and then all the other brands are followed suite quickly after.
Here are the 3 Serta mattresses that are still made double-sided today!
Note that they are all hotel-grade beds:
What is the firmest mattress Serta makes?
One of the firmer mattresses that Serta makes is the iComfort Blue Fusion 500.
Some other really firm Serta mattresses include:
Yes, I know. The iComfort Blue and iComfort Blue Fusion look the same. That’s because they’re from the same line. It’s what’s inside that counts!
Is Beautyrest made by Serta?
No, Beautyrest is not made by Serta, but there is a connection.
Beautyrest is the flagship brand of Simmons Bedding, which is a sister company of Serta, but they continue to operate as two separate and distinct business and brands.
Do you remember those commercials where someone drops a heavy bowling ball on the mattress?
That’s Beautyrest!
It was popular in the 1990’s and brought back in 2006.
What is inside a Serta mattress?
What’s inside a Serta mattress depends on which collection or model it is.
Let’s take the Serta Perfect Sleeper mattress for example:
- Top Layer – Pillow Top
- Second Layer – Comfort XD Foam
- Third Layer – Cool Twist Gel Memory Foam
- Fourth Layer – Serta Balanced Support Foam
- Fifth Layer – 886 Innerspring Coils
Check out our layer by layer section above for more details!
Do Serta mattresses need a boxspring?
Serta mattresses don’t necessarily need a boxspring.
Actually, most modern-day beds don’t need to be put on top of a box spring in order to function properly or to be more comfortable.
However, warranty policies haven’t changed in decades.
And most policies would require you to put the bed on a box spring in order for you to claim against it.
If you’re strictly just looking for a higher height, then any kind of hard, flat surface would do.
An adjustable base, platform bed, box spring or even directly on the floor.
Sealy vs Serta - Which is Better?
Sealy vs Serta.
We know one thing; they are not part of the same company.
Sealy has been in business for over 130 years, whereas Serta is only about two-thirds that (85+ years).
Which means they are different in many ways:
- how they make mattresses – this impacts the quality, the material used, their standard of firmness level
- how they run their company
- their warranty policy
- their customer service philosophy
- and so many more things!
As to which brand is better?
Well, I can’t really give you a straight answer.
Why?
Because we’d have to compare a specific Sealy model to a similar Serta model. Haven’t done that today, but maybe tomorrow.
Stay tuned!
