Best Overall Mattress Awardir?t=thesleepsavvy 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B00ENRBQVILucid and Linenspa are part of the same family – the Malouf family.

A luxury bedding company based in Logan, Utah with 15+ years of industry experience.

This is why it’s our #1 choice!

Let’s start with some “flaws”.

It’s actually a rollaway, not a folding bed and it’s not the most lightweight at 44 lbs.

BUT these are not dealbreakers for me.

You can still fold it in half and store it upright. The weight of it doesn’t really matter because you don’t need to lift it – you roll it into place.

If you’re like me and value convenience over space-saving, then go with this one.

ir?t=thesleepsavvy 20&language=en US&l=li3&o=1&a=B00ENRBQVILUCID makes their rollaway in 3 different sizes – Cot, Twin & Twin XL – so you can choose the perfect size for your specific need.

Made of mesh and springs, the bed frame it comes with has no uncomfortable bars that will poke you while you sleep.

Lucid Rollaway Guest Memory Mattress

Sitting at 11” off the ground, you can smoothly get in and out of bed. This is especially needed for elderly people, like your aging parents, or those with a bad back or hips.

Firm, supportive and 4″ thick…I’m talking about the mattress.

The top inch is memory foam, which molds to your body’s curves, and the lower 3” is certiPUR-US certified support foam. You can sleep well knowing that the foam is certified for minimal off-gassing.

The breathable rayon bamboo cover can be unzipped and conveniently thrown in the wash when it’s laundry time.

This rollaway was tested for maximum weight – it can withstand up to 300 lbs – for one person is more than enough.

As the only one in this list with a 10-year warranty, how can you go wrong with LUCID?

What are the Benefits of a Folding Bed?

There are many advantages of using a folding bed, including:

folding bed light weight for portability 2Lightweight in nature, a folding mattress is usually made of foam material.

This allows just about any self-functioning person to easily transport it from place to place – from home to the car to the gym or work!

Notes that while it is light, it may too bulky for smaller people to move it around.

Usually vacuum-sealed and shipped out in a compact box, you’ll have to let it inflate after you open it.

It may take as little as a few hours to a few days. And, that’s all that’s needed before you can use it.

Some may come with a bed frame, which will require some assembly.

However, it should come with instructions as well as all the nuts and bolts to save you a trip to the hardware store. Most are relatively simple and straightforward to set up.

Compared to an air mattress, a folding mattress is much faster to set up, take down and won’t deflate either.

When not in use, you can easily fold up the mattress and store them in any pocket of space within your home.

Underneath the bed, in the garage or maybe in your closet.

Each company manufactures different sizes, so take note of their dimension.

Think about where you can store it and measure that space BEFORE you take out your credit card. Doing some preparation up front can save you headaches in the future.

A folding mattress can be utilized in many different ways.

  • Other than serving as a bed for overnight guests, you can also fold it into a comfortable floor seat.
  • You can use it for your children’s sleepover parties, play dates, nap time and wrestling matches.
  • Exercising, camping and RV life are other ideas too.

A folding mattress can be used for just about anyone and any purpose you can think of.

Use your imagination!

A folding mattress is not, I repeat, NOT meant for daily use.

As a bed, it’s a good temporary solution for overnight, out-of-town visitors or a few days on the road in your trailer.

If you’re looking for a bed for long-term use, consider investing in a proper mattress instead. Your future-self will thank you!

Buyer's Guide: What to Look For in a Folding Bed

Other than knowing what your budget is, here are some other things to consider:

folding bed consider the sizeThis depends on how many people you want to fit on the mattress at one time.

A folding mattress typically comes in Twin, Full and, sometimes if you’re lucky, a Queen.

You can probably fit two or more kids on a Twin – depending on how big they are – but only one adult.

Will it only be kept at home for overnight guests, or will you be bringing it with you as you travel across the country?

How much a folding mattress weighs is important.

If kept at home, then a heavier one is completely acceptable.  If you’ll be moving it every month to a different location, then perhaps a lighter one is best-suited for your needs.

They can weigh anywhere from 10 lbs to 35+ lbs, so check the specs.

Is it just the folding bed, or does it also come with a storage bag and/or a portable bed frame?

Not to get your hopes up, but most folding mattresses won’t include a bed frame. If it does, the price will reflect that.

Some have a storage bag as part of the product, but it’s not 100% necessary. If you want to keep the dust at bay while stored away, cover it with some fabric material or buy a separate storage bag.

Some companies only make the folding mattress and don’t sell replacement parts.

If the zipper on the cover breaks or you get a stubborn stain on the storage bag, then that might be a problem.

It’s important to do your research beforehand.

Find out if the brand you’re considering buying from also sell replacement parts.

If not, is there another brand that makes these parts in the same size, or can you make it yourself?

Most covers are removable and machine-washable.

Perhaps, dryer-friendly too.

If not, then treat it like a proper mattress and spot clean with mild detergent.

Most covers are NOT waterproof, so be careful with liquids and not yet potty-trained kids or pets.

If that’s important to you, consider using a waterproof mattress protector or encasement.

Most, if not all, folding mattresses are 100% foam. However, there is a difference in the type of foam.

Here are the main four:

  • Polyurethane Foam – the most common foam material out there. It does the job but doesn’t offer the same benefits as other higher-quality foam.

CertiPUR-US Certified – Most environmental and health-conscious companies will seek out this approval.

Having this certification means that the product is safe to use.

The foam in the product has met rigorous testing standards, has low chemical emission for indoor air quality and doesn’t contain heavy metals that are harmful to users among other checkpoints.

  • Memory Foam – Originally invented by NASA to cushion astronauts’ buttocks, this foam has many benefits. From contouring to your shape to relieving pressure points to ventilating air flow to regular body temperature and more.

If the folding mattress has any amount of memory foam, the price tag will probably be a bit higher.

  • Latex Foam – True latex foam is 100% natural and expensive.

Made from the sap of the Rubber Tree, latex lasts the longest, instantly conforms to your body and prevents dust mites or mold from forming.

Making it great for humid climates!

  • Hybrid – A mix between memory or latex and polyurethane foam.

A hybrid brings the benefits of either memory foam or latex without the high price tag.

This material is also not typically seen in a folding mattress.

The thickness can span anywhere from 2” to 6” or more, with 4” being the average.

I wouldn’t recommend most folding mattresses for:

  • daily use,
  • senior citizens,
  • people who are extremely tall or hefty, or
  • those with injuries.

If budget is an issue and this is your last resort, then opt for the thickness one possible.

If the company tested their mattress for weight capacity, the maximum limit should be on their product description.

If not, most will probably say their folding bed can withstand a reasonable amount of weight. You’ll have to use your judgment on what is ‘reasonable’.

For example, if you buy a twin size folding mattress, it won’t fit or hold up the weight of two fully-grown adults.

Around 200 lb is safe, though I’ve seen up to 350 lbs for the tested weight limit.

This depends on how often you use it.

The more frequent or more weight or more abuse the mattress takes, the faster it’ll start to lose its form.

If properly taken care of and not used daily, a folding mattress can last years!

The amount of folds a mattress has is important if you have a sensitive body or mind feeling the divots or creases of the bed.

You probably can’t get away from it but you can lessen the feeling with the smallest number of folds possible.

A folding mattress can have anywhere from 0 to 3+ folds. The common one is a tri-fold, meaning that there are 2 divots.

If you’re using a folding mattress more often as a chair or couch, then perhaps a higher number of folds is better.

The more folds, the higher the seat can become, making it easier for people to sit on and get up.

Some come with a warranty and some don’t.

Most of the time, there is a trial period where you can return the folding mattress within a certain number of days.

However, due to the lower price point of the product, warranties are not as common.

If the company does offer a warranty, remember to read the fine print! Most warranties only cover manufacturer defect and not normal wear-and-tear.

Also, the number of years of the warranty does not equate to how long the product will last for.

Unlike a proper bed, folding mattresses are not offered in different firmness options.

A general rule of thumb is: the thicker the mattress, the softer it feels. For example, if you opt for a 2” mattress, it’ll typically feel harder than a 4”.

The less material there is, the less give it can possibly have.

If you need it to be even softer, consider using a mattress topper.

Best Folding Bed FAQ

Not too familiar with portable fold up beds?

Check out some of the frequently asked questions below!

A folding bed is called many different names depending on its style. They are also known as:

  • Murphy bed (in North America) – wall bed, pulldown bed, folddown bed
  • Cot – usually for infants
  • Rollaway bed
  • Hideaway bed
  • Truckle or trundle bed
  • Fold up bed – could be bifold or trifold mattress, depending on how many folds it has

No, it’s NOT OK fold a mattress in half – it’ll just damage the support and sleeping surface.

It doesn’t matter what type is it – be it pocket springs, memory foam, latex or a hybrid – folding or bending a mattress can do the following:

  • Void your warranty – Most warranties only cover manufacturer’s defect anyway
  • Destroy the inside material – Coils won’t be in perfect shape, foam will get lumpy or bent, the edges won’t be even, and more!
  • Ruin the outer structure – Typically, there’s a frame around the edge of the mattress that the insides are aligned with or tethered to. If frame brokes or gets deformed, the inner filling won’t be able to hold up for long by itself

Just because it came rolled up, doesn’t mean that you should store them in a folded or bent position.

So, fold at your own peril!

Well, aren’t you a lucky one! This article covers the 5 best folding beds.

We did all the work and narrowed it down to only the top ones, so you get to save time on research and analysis, as well as avoid overwhelming decision fatigue.

Here are the 5 best-rated portable, fold up beds for guests:

  1. LUCID Memory Foam Rollaway Bed
  2. Best Choice Products (BCP) Portable Folding Bed
  3. Milliard Memory Foam Trifold Bed
  4. iBed Hideaway Foam Folding Bed
  5. Cozzzi Trifold Foam Folding Bed

Yes, folding beds can be comfortable. Follow these steps to make it nice and cozy for you or your guests:

  1. Get a New Bed – If it’s too old, lumpy, deformed or tattled – it’s time for a new one. Folding beds are not considered expensive and they last a long time if you maintain them.
  2. Layer on a Mattress Topper – Necessary if you bought a thinner folding bed, and makes it more luxurious on a thicker mattress. Instant improvement in coziness!
  3. No Topper? Sleep on the Duvet – In a pinch, sleeping on a thick, padded duvet will do just fine.
  4. Clean it Regularly – This one is common sense (because who would want to sleep on a dirty bed?!) but it also extends the life of your folding bed. You also may want to air them out once in a while, especially if it’s kept in storage for long periods of time.
  5. Use Quality Bedding – Often overlooked but essential to a comfortable bed. I mean, it’s what our skin touches throughout the night, so why put cheap bedding on a quality mattress?
  6. Fill Any Gaps – Especially with a bifold or trifold mattress, your torso may feel the gaps in the fold, so close it by stuffing small pillows or a towel

And that’s how you can make a folding bed, and just about any bed for that matter, more comfortable!

That folds it up!

They’re super convenient, easy-to-store and perfect for overnight guests. I have a few myself and think everyone should have one.

I hope our 5 best folding bed reviews, you’ll pick the right one for you.
